How to make a Savile Row suit .
A two-part observational film illustrates the nuanced couture production of an Anderson & Sheppard Savile Row suit on the occasion of MoMA’s fashion exhibition, Items: Is Fashion Modern?
Bespoke Savile Row tailors Anderson & Sheppard are pioneers of the English Drape, a now-classic suiting silhouette, that surfaced as a more comfortable alternative to the rigid constraints of military dress early in the 20th century.
On occasion of MoMA’s first fashion exhibition since 1944, I assisted the MoMA video team on location in producing a film that illustrates the couture production of a Savile Row Suit. To help visitors and design students develop critical tools to appreciate and contextualize fashion design, we were keen to bring a nuanced portrayal of processes that are otherwise glossed over in short films, like the act of measuring for motion.
The final film celebrates the evolution of process, and honors all teams, tools, and workrooms. Released in two parts to maximize engagement on the Museum’s YouTube channel, the film has since accrued nearly two million organic views each, and is frequently featured on (unintentional) ASMR playlists.
